The Ice Box Challenge

By Karen McBoob on June 24, 2015 in Blog, Featured Articles, Humor

So about a year ago my Aunt, who lives in Scotland, sent me a video of my cousin Ben and his two older boys doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

I showed the video to Lola to see if she could understand what the fuck they were saying (gerdamned Scots bootcherin’ the Queen’s Anglish). She said, “I’m not sure what they were saying, but I think you got nominated, Karen. (I’m so sorry).”

A few days later, my mom and my mother in law stopped over. Can I just say … I love these two ladies! No joke … I know some folks don’t get along with their  in-laws, but I have NEVER (not once) had that problem. It’s like I’ve got two moms. Very cool.

So Mom and Mom came over to visit and it was just like “Girls Gone Wild” only without any ‘girls’ and no wild. [1]

I got out my iPad to show my mom the video of her nephew Ben and his boys. (I’m still kicking myself for not videotaping her reaction). Before I hit play, I told her about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and how it’s been great for raising awareness of this heart wrenching disease, and also raising money for ALS research.

I should also preface this by saying, my mom has macular degeneration which means she can’t see very well. Additionally, I played the video while we were sitting out on the deck, and the screen is hard to see in the sunlight. My mom also has trouble watching and listening at the same time … so she talked through the entire video.

First she said, “Oh, that’s Ian!” Then she turned toward my mother in law and said, “That’s my sister Barbara’s husband.” (My mother in law has met Barbara and Ian).

I was like, “No, Mom, that’s Ben.” (Ben is Ian and Barbara’s oldest son).

Mom: I think that’s Ian.

Me: No mom, that’s Ben, and his two older boys, Alfie and Daniel.

Mom: That sounds like Ian.

Me: I know Mom, but it’s Ben with two of his boys.

Mom: Are you sure that’s not Ian?

Me: I’m sure.

Mom: What are they doing?

Me: I just told you, they’re doing the ALS Ice Bucket challenge… remember?

Mom: Oh, right.

A second later…

Mom: Ian is doing the ice box challenge?

Me: No Mom, Ben is doing the ice bucket challenge.

Mom: That sounds like Ian.

Me: Yeah mom, it’s Unce Ian doing an ice box challenge.

Don’t you love old people?

I also love Scottish accents, and so does Lola, so she sent me a video of Robin Williams’ (R.I.P.) doing a bit about the Scots’ invention of golf. (Robin Williams is sorely missed):

[1] Girls Gone Wild is a franchise that mostly makes videos of drunken college women on spring break showing their boobs, because women’s lib (?).
